March Madness

I will be taking a break from my regular musings on politics and world affairs for the next few days. I have recently finished mid-terms (my last round of mid-terms) and am now enjoying a nice relaxing Spring Break.

In reality Spring Break should mean that I can blog more, but this time of year is marked by the single biggest event on any sports fan’s calendar: March Madness

Yes, I am a bracketologist.

I have to say that after radically rethinking my bracket picking strategy based on my unfortunate experiences last year (losing several sweet 16 teams early on) my bracket is doing exceedingly well. I am currently ranked 54th in the country (on ESPN.com) after the conclusion of Round 1, and with some good breaks in the next couple of days I could surge to the top of the standings.

My highest previous finish in the ESPN challenge was way back in 2002 (my first year competing) when I finished in the low 1,000s. It would be magnificent to get into the triple-digits this year.

I am currently a huge fan of Pittsburgh, Stanford, Xavier and grudgingly Duke… who need to pick up their play to avoid really hurting me by losing against West Virginia. Sadly this year I picked mostly with the chalk (picking the higher seeds) and it has payed off. I deftly picked upsets by Kansas State, Villanova, and Western Kentucky–but missed out on the shockers by Siena and San Diego (which eliminated one of my sweet 16 teams). Unfortunately my only remaining upset will be wins by Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.

Something’s gotta give.
